It is the most visited chateau after Versailles. Surnamed the Chateaux of the Ladies, it was built at the beginning of the XVI th century by Katherine Briçonnet, Catherine de Medicis improved the look and Louise Dupin salvaged it from the French revolution. Handsomely furnished and decorated, the chateau owns superb paintings: Rubens, Poussin, Veronese….

This Abbey has always been under the protection of Kings.
Located at the centre of the “Angevin” empire borne from the marriage between Henri II and Alieonor d’Aquitaine, the Abbey was under the attentive protection of Henri II, future King of England.
The four recumbent figures of Henri II, his wife Alieonor, their son Richard Coeur de Lion and Isabelle of Angouleme (Jean sans Terre’s wife) are the witnesses of the deep link between this dynasty and the Abbey.
Three Kings have marked on the fortress, two Kings of England, Henri II and Richard Coeur de Lion, one King of France Philippe August who, by his victory against the Plantagenet, became the new owner in 1205.
Charles VII, called the King of Bourges, became established at Chinon, which remains the seat of the Court until 1450.
